What Is a VETASSESS Professional Occupations Skills Assessment?

A VETASSESS Professional Occupations Skills Assessment evaluates whether your qualifications and professional employment experience are suitable for your nominated occupation in Australia. The occupation you nominate should accurately reflect your actual qualifications, skills, employment history and professional duties.

VETASSESS currently assesses a broad range of professional occupations covering areas such as business and finance, arts and education, science, health and agriculture, construction and manufacturing, hospitality and retail, among others.

Because different occupations have different qualification and employment requirements, it is important to review the occupation-specific criteria before applying. VETASSESS publishes individual occupation information, including the relevant ANZSCO code, occupation description, group allocation and qualification and employment criteria.

We do not recommend selecting an occupation simply because it appears to offer a convenient migration pathway. Instead, your nominated occupation should be supported by your actual background and the relevant VETASSESS requirements.

Toolmaker VETASSESS Skills Assessment is an important step for skilled tradespeople who want to migrate to Australia. If you have experience making or repairing precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures, this occupation could be a suitable pathway for skilled migration.

Why Choose Professional Occupations Guidance?

Choosing the correct occupation is one of the most important parts of preparing a VETASSESS application. VETASSESS assesses hundreds of professional occupations, so applicants need to carefully compare their background with the occupation description and assessment criteria.

Our service helps you identify the relationship between your education, employment history, professional responsibilities and nominated ANZSCO occupation. This can help reduce common documentation problems and ensure your application is prepared around the applicable assessment criteria.

We also review whether your employment evidence adequately demonstrates your claimed work experience. Where applicable, employment evidence may include statements of service, payslips, taxation records, bank statements and other supporting documents. VETASSESS states that applicants should provide the required employment evidence for each position they want considered in their formal assessment.

An Aeronautical Engineer is involved in the design, development, testing, maintenance and improvement of aircraft and aviation systems. They learn about aircraft performance, read engineering information, resolve technical issues, and ensure aircraft safety and operating requirements.

Qualification Assessment for VETASSESS

Your educational background is an important part of a professional occupations assessment. Generally, applicants need to provide evidence of completed qualifications, including the award certificate and academic transcript. VETASSESS uses the submitted information to determine the comparability and relevance of the qualification against the applicable Australian requirements.

The relevance of your qualification can vary depending on the nominated occupation and its VETASSESS group. For example, certain Group A occupations require a qualification comparable to an Australian Qualifications Framework Bachelor degree or higher in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation, together with specified relevant employment experience.

This makes it important to understand your occupation-specific criteria rather than relying on a general checklist.

Employment Evidence and Professional Experience

Your employment history is another major component of the VETASSESS Professional Occupations assessment. Applicants need to provide evidence that supports their employment claims, including information about their position, employment dates, duties and remuneration.

A Statement of Service should generally be issued on official company letterhead and include details such as your name, position title, employment dates, working hours, main duties and salary. It should also contain appropriate referee and employer contact information.

Additional payment evidence can include payslips, taxation records, bank statements showing salary payments or other acceptable employment-linked records.

For self-employed applicants, VETASSESS may require business registration evidence, accountant or legal professional documentation, statutory declarations, payment evidence and supplementary evidence such as contracts, project records or client documentation.

Our team can help you organise these documents logically and identify areas where additional supporting evidence may be required.

The job of a Telecommunications Network Engineer (TNE) is to design, develop, install, and manage communication networks to support voice, video, internet and data services.

Professional Occupation and ANZSCO Matching

Selecting the right ANZSCO occupation is essential for a successful VETASSESS application. Your occupation should reflect the actual nature of your professional work rather than simply matching your job title.

For example, two professionals may have similar job titles but perform significantly different duties. VETASSESS therefore considers the substance of your qualifications and employment experience when assessing your nominated occupation.

Our VETASSESS Professional Occupations Service helps you review your professional profile against the relevant occupation description and identify the occupation that most appropriately represents your background.

VETASSESS Document Preparation Support

Incomplete or inconsistent documentation can make the assessment process more complicated. VETASSESS advises applicants to submit high-quality colour scans of original documents. Documents issued in languages other than English generally need to be accompanied by appropriate English translations.

Depending on your circumstances, your application may require:

  • Passport and identity documents
  • Qualification certificates
  • Academic transcripts
  • Updated CV or résumé
  • Statements of Service
  • Payslips or salary evidence
  • Taxation documents
  • Bank statements
  • Self-employment evidence
  • Professional registration or licence documents
  • Additional occupation-specific evidence

We help you organise the required documentation before submission so that your application is structured around the applicable requirements.

Latest VETASSESS Updates for 2026

VETASSESS has introduced several updates affecting professional applications in 2026. From 29 June 2026, electronic declarations became available through the Professional Skills Recognition Application Portal, allowing applicants and authorised representatives to sign declarations electronically. The portal also introduced options for DAMA renewals and reassessments.

VETASSESS has also announced that Professional Skills Assessment fees will increase from 9 September 2026, with the changes applying to professional skills assessments and several related services. Applications received before 9 September 2026 are charged at the current rates.

VETASSESS also updated its professional assessment processes from December 2025, including published processing timeframes. The organisation indicated a target timeframe of approximately 7 weeks for professional migration skills assessments, excluding periods when applicants need to provide missing information or additional documentation.

Because assessment requirements, fees and procedures can change, applicants should always check the latest VETASSESS information before lodging an application.
